I just finished watching the movie Saw on the Sci-Fi channel. I never saw it before, but it creeped me out for real. Not many movies can do that. I started scouring IMDB shortly after for information about the plot. Apparently it was partially inspired from nightmares the directors used to have as children. I thought about that side of ourselves, the shadow side, an archetype that lives in our subconscious but interacts closely with our conscious minds. It can come out in things like dreams I think much like I probably experienced when I had those strange dreams I blogged about briefly yesterday. The ego keeps some of shadow or 'irrational' tendencies at bay which seems interesting to me because on the soul level the ego is also something to be overcome. In some respects the ego should be considered important even if primarily on the physical level. It does act as a conduit between our instinctual desires and the part that attempts to make moral decisions. The soul acts in a similar manner by being the conduit between our physical and divine realities. Unfortunately, it's a little harder for us to communicate with our soul. Instead we have to battle our ego, our instincts, our shadowy nature in order to get to it. Despite that seemingly unsermountable challenge, recognizing the pathway to transformation is a step in the right direction. The quote below by Jung summerizes it, although I vote we channel a little bit more than our consciousness to get us through.
When we must deal with problems, we instinctively resist trying the way that leads through obscurity and darkness. We wish to hear only of unequivocal results, and completely forget that these results can only be brought about when we have ventured into and emerged again from the darkness. But to penetrate the darkness we must summon all the powers of enlightenment that consciousness can offer.
Oh yeah, hi. This is my first entry...on this blog. I create them on an impulse.
